TMJ & TMD

Orofacial pain, headache, sleep, and temporomandibular disorders (TMD or TMJ) can cause a range of symptoms, including frequent headaches, face pain, jaw pain, TMJ pain, TMD, head and neck pain, tinnitus, earache, snoring, and sleep apnea. These disorders can also cause dental issues such as chipped teeth, tooth grinding or clenching, dental bruxism, sore teeth, broken teeth, cracked tooth syndrome, and flattening off teeth.

Diagnosis and management of these disorders require specialized training and expertise. Dr. John Johnson has been a student of correct jaw and teeth function and TMD or TMJ since dental school at The Ohio State University. He has been mentored by leading dentists in this area of study, including Dr. Richard Huffman DDS, Dr. Wesley Shankland DDS, Bill McHorris DDS, Alan Brodine DDS MS, Jim Metz DDS, Richard Tucker DDS, and Farran Robson DDS.

The use of a leaf gauge invented by Dr. Huffman is instrumental in helping diagnose muscle and TMJ dysfunction and is useful in creating and adjusting night guards and other orthotics for the mouth. The leaf gauge is also used in performing full mouth equilibrations.

If you are clenching or grinding teeth, you may develop loose teeth, broken teeth, worn teeth, sore jaw muscles, or a sore or painful jaw joint (TMJ). If you are chipping or flattening front teeth or wearing or breaking molars, you may benefit from a nightguard.

If you are experiencing symptoms of orofacial pain, headache, sleep, or TMD or TMJ, it is important to seek diagnosis and management from a dentist with specialized training and expertise in this area.
